How to Recover Gold from Cell phones?

The cell phone has become an essential thing in our life today. We seem to be incomplete without cell phones. And it is a plus point for the E-waste recyclers. There is a great variation in the yields of precious metals from the cell phones of different makes. I mean, you don’t get the same amount of precious metals from all the cell phones. Branded mobile phones give you better gold recovery than the cheaper ones, especially, made in china. If you dismantle a cell phone, you will find the gold on its motherboard (PCB), the connectors in cell phones are gold plated. The chips on the mobile motherboard also have gold in them.
Before recovering gold from the cell phones, you have to dismantle them. The ceramic capacitors in the cell phones contain silver, gold, palladium and sometime platinum also. So, first of all remove all the components from the motherboards carefully. There are many videos on YouTube that explain the dismantling of cell phones. You can watch one or two videos and understand the whole process.
First, we will talk about gold recovery from mobile PCB. These days there are many non cyanide gold recovery chemical compounds with different brand names available in the market. You can search them on the net and buy one. They are very economical and most of them are made in China. Their brochures provide you complete details about how to use the chemicals for gold recovery. So, for gold recovery from mobile PCBs, you can use that chemical. Another option is cyanide gold recovery also. But cyanide is harmful. If you need some help about it. You can write to me also.
Secondly, we need to recover gold from gold plated connectors used in mobile phones. You can use nitric acid for it. Gold recovery from gold plated pins through nitric acid is also a good process. But you should do it in an open place or an appropriately ventilated room.
Thirdly, you have to process chips for gold recovery. Chips are first burnt, and then ground into a fine powder. Then the pins are separated from the powder/ash through a sieve. Store these pins, and when you have a saleable quantity of these pins, you can sell them to a smelter.
The fine ash contains the very thin gold wires used in bonding in the integrated circuits. So, you can wash away all the ash with water using a metal bowl. This method is known as panning. There are many companies who sell these panning bowls. They show you a demo also. It is not very expensive. You can get it at an affordable price. After removing the ash, you have silicon chips and golden wires left in the bowl. You can recycle that gold with aqua regia.
Apart from chips, there are other components also on the motherboard that contain gold. They can also be treated with aqua regia for gold recovery.
I have intentionally kept the article short. Mentioning all the details about gold recovery processes would make the article too long. And some people might find a long article boring. So, I have given the basic ideas about the processes mentioned above. You can always write to me, if you need to know more about any of the processes mentioned in the article. You can reach me through my website: www.recovercomputergold.com

Is there any future for e-waste recycling in India?

E-waste recycling undoubtedly holds a great future in India. But you have to streamline this trade. Last year, 1.85 million tons of e-waste was generated in India.
We are all  increasingly getting addicted to a variety of electronic devices. So, obviously, every year the quantity of e-waste in India is going to be even more. India is marching towards prosperity at a faster pace. And this has given the Indian consumer a great power to buy good brands of mobiles and laptops, etc... Expensive brands use more precious metals in their gadgets. And, as a result, when recycling companies recycle precious metals from them, they make more profit.
Electronic scrap recycling is a metal business. Metal business has many advantages- it is a cash business. Any metal sells like hot cakes. Iron is the cheapest metal compared to copper and aluminum, etc.; you can even sell this metal any time on the phone. The reason being, every metal finds so many uses that its demand never decreases. There could be little timely fluctuation in the prices sometimes, but it does not affect the demand much. These factors plus many more make people opt for e-waste recycling business in India.
All the big companies just want to get rid of e-waste because they want their place clean. That’s why they dispose of their e-waste either at a very little price or free of any charge. Some of the workers of the big firms are very careless. They throw away the computer or just any other electronic device even with the slightest fault. And the recyclers benefit a great deal from this practice. When the recyclers pick up CPUs or monitors from big companies, they segregate them and have those machines tested and refurbished. Around 30 to 40 percent material, be it computers or mobile phones or just any other e-scrap becomes functional with slight repair. And, this way, recyclers make a lot of profit. And this will never stop.
Another important thing that goes in favour of the licensed recyclers is that the government has made a law that only licensed recyclers can pick up the material now, because 80% e-waste in India is processed in illegal/unauthorized sector. And the people in the unauthorized sector don’t use any machines to process it. They simply burn big piles of it in the open and create a lot of pollution. Until sometime back, it was a big problem for the authorized e-waste recyclers, because they had tough competition with the small scale illegal sector recyclers. But now, the government of India is very strict about the pollution issues. It is coming down very hard on the unauthorized sector. A lot of the raids are conducted in the illegal sector; the unbilled materials worth hundreds of millions of rupees are seized every month. Severe penalties are imposed. And this goes in favour of the registered recyclers. Because all these strict measures are taking the e-waste recycling industry towards an opportunity which the registered recyclers had long been waiting for. So, there is definitely a good future for e-waste recycling in India in an environment friendly manner.

Gold content in BGA chips

How much gold from one kilo of BGA chips? Well the answer is quite a lot. You get 7 grams of gold per kilo. But, here you have to be very careful about one particular thing. And that is that you get this yield from Intel BGA chips. If it is quite an old batch from Korea or Taiwan, you can get up to 3 grams of gold per kilo. But BGA chips from Chinese motherboards have a very low yield. You won’t believe you don’t even get half gram of gold from the current Chinese BGA chips per kilo. We get BGA chips from rams also. From those chips, we get around 3 grams of gold per kilo. Some rams have normal chips. Their current yield is 1.1 grams of gold per kilo.
In my next post, I will explain the process of gold recovery from BGA chips.

How to set up an E-waste Recycling Plant/Facility

Start electronic scrap recycling and get rich soon. This is one of the world’s best businesses these days because it is a metal business. You get gold, silver, palladium, platinum, copper, lead, tin, aluminum and so many rare metals from this.
First and foremost thing before starting a business is to look for the sources of the raw material at a very good price. And the best thing about this business is that e-waste generation is increasing by the day.
Second important factor is to decide the size of the plant, according to your budget. Third is the area of the land. And the fourth and most important aspect is the selection of the machinery. The best electronic scrap recycling machines are either from Germany or Italy. China also makes electronic waste recycling plants, but they are not as durable as that of Germany and Italy. Some Turkish companies also sell these plants. They too are not as satisfactory as their manufacturers claim them to be. So, do a thorough research before buying the electronic waste recycling machines.
After this comes the skilled chemists and engineers. Most of the plants fail just because their consultants, chemists, engineers and the management team as a whole lack expertise in the field.
Another important aspect to be kept in mind is that don’t start the facility right away. I mean to say, gain some experience first. You may either do a job in a recycling facility to understand the nature of the business completely or start the business on a small scale first. The benefits of this strategy are that you get to understand all the ups and downs of the business. You can even first start as a dismantler. Even if you have some loss, it will be very little in comparison to the one you might have by starting the plant without experience.
The secret I am going to reveal to you now is that inexperienced people are not able to decide what material to process and what not? Whereas experienced people only recycle the stuff that gives more profit. I receive so many calls from people in the process of setting up the e-waste recycling facility almost every week telling me their consultant has advised them to recycle computer motherboards only. And I pray to God for their mental equilibrium in the time to come.
So, it is undoubtedly a good business, yet you need to take into consideration so many aspects before starting an e-waste facility. This topic is very big, so I will keep providing you with very useful information on it in parts.
Hope you like the tips that I have given. It is the result of my thirty years of experience in this field.

Silver Recovery Raw Materials

How to recover silver/silver recovery process/silver extraction/x-ray film silver recovery
All these keywords used on different search engines indicate people’s quest for learning silver recovery process and make money. I receive a lot of phone calls and emails in which people ask me about the silver recovery process either from X-ray films or from fixer solution. It portrays that majority of people who are interested in the silver recovery process are of the opinion that there are only two things from which you can recover the silver. But it is not so. There is a long list of items from which you can recover silver and make money. I would like to mention a few of them.

Apart from x-ray films and fixer solution, you can also recover silver from Ultrasound films, Compact Discs, diodes (electronic components), silver coated connectors mostly used in electronic industry, silver coated wires, Mirrors, Mobile Tower Boxes, Electrical Contacts, silver plated bathroom accessories, Crockery, Silver Oxide Battery, Solar Panels and old coins etc.
The best thing about them is that they are available in good quantity. And you can start this business with little investment and make a living out of it. And it is quite easy to recover silver from them.
Some people find it hard to trust. But they don’t know the fact that half of the silver consumed every year finds use in industrial applications. So, the recycling of silver from such items is undoubtedly a profitable business.
For further assistance on this matter, you can write to me.

Recover Gold from Electronic Scrap

Gold Recovery from Electronic Scrap is a very lucrative business. But you must find out the right source to buy the material. Because there are two things when you start this business. Number one you should choose the right methods to recover all precious metals from electronic waste (E-Waste). Number two- you should be good at purchasing the material also. Being good at only one thing won’t help.
When we say electronic scrap, it is not one single big thing. It is a mixture of either, so many electronic circuit boards or a variety of whole devices. The best thing about it, according to my experience is that you should not process everything. You should be choosy if you want to make more money in a short time. When we talk about precious metal recovery from electronic scrap, it is not every component of the electronic scrap that yields precious metals. There are only particular components where precious metals are used. For example, chips, processors, golden fingers, gold plated connectors, some special diodes and transistors, monolithic ceramic capacitors  and relays etc..
If you happen to buy a mixed lot of electronic scrap, you should first segregate the items. Now one by one take away the above mentioned precious metal bearing components. There are customers for almost everything that you get from e-waste. So, you can sell the rest of the items (Non gold bearing ones) to the e-waste recyclers.
There are tests through which you can determine the presence of different precious metals. For example, if you think that a particular component is silver plated. You can first put a drop of nitric acid on it, and then a drop of hydrochloric acid. If there is silver, either in the form of alloy or polish; there will be curd- like formation on the surface of the metal. For gold, you can put a drop of nitric acid on a component or a piece of metal looking like gold. Gold does not react with nitric acid. It stays as it is. If it is copper or brass etc., nitric acid will react and dissolve the metal. The same way, there are methods for testing palladium and platinum also.
Gold polish can be removed from the components through an AP process. CPU’s/Processors are best treated for gold recovery with aqua regia. Gold can be removed from the pins through sulfuric cell also.
In my next article, we will discuss some precious metal recovery methods in detail.

Please follow, share and like my blog, and oblige me with your comments if you like this article.
Thanks for your time!

CPU-Processor Gold Recovery

CPU gold recovery can be done in many ways. Some people crush the whole CPU into powder and then separate the metals from the powder through density separation. But in my opinion, this is not the best way because you have precious metals lost in it. CPUs contain gold, palladium, silver, etc. People normally think that you get only gold from the processors. It is not true. If you look at them closely, you will see MLCCs on them. MLCCs (Monolithic Ceramic Capacitors) contain palladium, silver, and gold.

So, the best gold recovery method for CPUs and processors is to recover gold through aqua regia. You should first remove MLCCs from the processors and store these small capacitors safely for silver, gold, and palladium recovery in the future when they are in enough quantity. Now break the processors into smaller pieces with a hammer. Prepare the aqua regia solution. The aqua regia solution is one part nitric acid and three parts hydrochloric acid. You should use a heat-resistant glass pot for it. First, put the broken processors into the pot, and now pour some aqua regia into the pot. Aqua regia solution will start dissolving pins, including gold. Do it in an open space or a properly ventilated room, and use safety gear.

Separate the solution from the solids after the reaction has stopped completely. Now you need to neutralise this gold-bearing aqua regia solution. And, for this, you may use urea. Add some urea to the solution, and there will be a lot of fizzing. There will be lots of foam. After some time, the foam will disappear. Again, add some more urea to the solution. The foam will form on the surface and subside quickly. Keep repeating it till the foam starts taking longer to subside. Stop adding urea to the solution when foams take too long to subside. Now your solution is neutralized. Filter this solution and recover your gold with sodium metabisulfite (SMB).
